  • Workshop on Writing Academic Papers in Urban/Transportation Studies

    Lecturer:
    Prof. Hironori Kato
Department of Civil Engineering, The University of Tokyo
    kato@civil.t.u-tokyo.ac.jp

    Descriptions:
Academic researchers in any research subjects including urban and/or transportation research have been required strongly to publish academic papers. Institutional pressure of publication to researchers has been recently stronger in many universities/research institutes. Unfortunately, most of major academic journals in urban and transportation fields tend to follow the traditional western style where papers should be written in English, major publishers are US or European firms, and most of editors in major journals are US or European researchers. This means that researchers from Asian countries whose mother tongues are non-English and who have never learned the western-style writing methods should suffer from publishing the academic papers in those journals. How can non-English speaking Asian researchers overcome the publication barriers and publish more papers in international journals? This workshop attempts to answer the above questions through discussions among participants with sharing their experiences. It highlights mainly the transportation research due to the lecturer’s capacity. Thus please note that the discussions in this workshop may not be applicable to other research fields.

    Expected participants
Young researchers in Indonesia’s universities studying urban and/or transportation research including PhD candidates, postdoctoral, and assistant/associate professors.
